More About The Breed

The Goldendoodle was bred to be a family dog. They are sturdy and playful, full of energy from day one. They can be trained to compete in sports like agility and obedience, but they thrive on being part of a family unit, where their sole purpose is companionship.
While training, it is important to account for their sensitivity to harsh tones. They don’t easily tolerate strict discipline, so positive reinforcement is key. However, with patience and consistency, they are loyal and obedient companions.

The Goldendoodle is pretty easy to keep happy. Their coats are good protection in the winter months, while they are fairly tolerant to warmer seasons. Just be aware that no pet should be exposed to temperature extremes, either hot or cold. If you have a small apartment, the Goldendoodle may not be the dog breed for you. It is recommended that this breed has room to move and unwind, as they are very energetic.

Goldendoodles live 10-15 years and are generally healthy, but they are susceptible to hip dysplasia, which is common in both Golden Retrievers and Poodles. This is genetic, so the hip health of parents should be taken into consideration before breeding them. With their mixed breed heritage, they are not as likely to contract genetic diseases as their purebred counterparts.

Because of the high trainability of the Goldendoodle, it is not uncommon to see a first-time dog parent choose this breed.

The Goldendoodle coat can range from a sleek wavy coat like the Golden Retriever to the tight, coarse curls of the Poodle. A Goldendoodle with any coat type will benefit from regular brushing. Professional grooming is recommended every 6-8 weeks where they should have their coat washed and cut and their nails trimmed. Regular ear care is suggested to prevent ear mites and ear infections.

Goldendoodles are extremely energetic and require lots of playtime. They have no problem keeping up with a busy schedule and they thoroughly enjoy being included in family activities and adventures. Due to their varied size, Goldendoodles can thrive in apartment life or in more rural areas.

Goldendoodles are a mix between the Golden Retriever and either the Standard or Miniature Poodle. Their size as adults depends largely on their parents’ sizes.

Standard Goldendoodles weigh 40-90 pounds and stand 20-25 inches tall.
Mini Goldendoodles weigh 15-40 pounds and stand 13-20 inches tall.
