More About The Breed

  • With its smooth and powerful gait, intelligent eyes, and lustrous blond coat, it's not a mystery that the Golden Retriever stands as one of America’s most popular dog breeds. This exuberant Scottish gundog excels at a wide range of lifestyles like hunting and fieldwork, guiding, and being a family pet.

  • The Golden Retriever is an outgoing, trustworthy, and easy-going family pet. They are relatively simple to train and would do most anything to please their owner. Bred for hours of hunting and retrieving waterfowl, this breed thoroughly enjoys a good swim and will never get tired of fetch. Better yet, both!
  • Golden Retrievers are generally very friendly to strangers, children, and other pets. They love interacting with others and pick up training rather quickly, as they are extremely intelligent, loyal, and eager to please.

The Golden Retriever is an adaptable breed. They do well in just about any climate, but like any dog can be sensitive to extreme heat. They are not at all happy being left alone for long periods, so make sure this dog will have an active role in your life. They are somewhat sensitive to their surroundings, so be aware of this when having a large gathering and make sure they feel included but not overwhelmed.

  • Golden Retrievers have good bloodlines and live 10-12 years. As with all breeds, they are susceptible to certain diseases, especially dysplasia of the hips and elbows and eye conditions. Check with your breeder to find out the history of the parents.

This AKC-recognized breed is suitable for even novice owners. Golden Retrievers are highly intelligent, attentive, and eager to please their owners, which makes them a highly trainable dog breed.

  • Golden Retrievers are shedders, but with habitual weekly brushing, increased to daily during shedding season, this can be minimalized. As with all breeds, their regular nail trimmings, and ear and teeth cleanings are recommended.
  • Goldens are sporting dogs and require plenty of daily exercise. They make great companions for walks, runs, and bike rides. As they age into adulthood, you’ll find that their energy level adapts well to your lifestyle. Because of their high intelligence, they also excel at canine sports like hunting, agility, obedience, and tracking.
  • Golden Retrievers stand 21-24 inches tall and weigh 55-75 pounds.

This dog breed usually lives for 10-12 years.

Golden Retrievers have made plenty of famous appearances, including starring in Disney’s Air Bud and as Comet in Full House.
