Their gentle, loving nature makes them a great fit for families with young children.

Berners are known for their thick, black coat with distinct white and rust markings. They love their humans and are particularly gentle with small children.

Berners are affectionate and aim to please. They are easy to train with a focus on positive reinforcement since they don’t respond well to harsh tones. They love to be close to their families and often latch onto one lucky individual. Challenges include discouraging dominant and protective behavior, which can be prevented with proper socialization from a young age.

The Bernese Mountain Dog loves his family, and needs to be with them and involved in their lives! If you are a person who lives in an apartment, doesn’t have a large yard, and won’t be active with your pet, the Bernese Mountain Dog is not for you.

This dog breed requires a strong and present role in the pack, being involved in family picnics, hikes, and vacations if possible. When this breed is left alone for extended periods, or separated from its family, it can develop bad behavior. This is the case with most working class dog breeds, as they are breeds developed with the purpose to serve their owner. This breed is very comfortable in a cold climate, but will not like extreme heat.

Bernese Mountain Dogs are hearty animals with a lifespan of 7-10 years, but they may be more susceptible to certain issues like cancer, hip and elbow issues, and as a large breed, they can suffer from gastric torsion, also known as a twisted stomach or "bloat". Proper diet and exercise along with the health of the parents play a large role in their overall health. This is why it is always important to ask your breeder about the health of the parents.

This breed should work well for most novice owners, but training is key. Obedience training is recommended.

With a double coat, Bernese Mountain Dogs are heavy shedders, especially during the spring and fall. Making a habit of weekly brushing, increasing to daily during shedding seasons. The Berner requires routine care, including tooth care and ear cleaning.

The Bernese Mountain Dog is big and powerful, but not necessarily high energy. They enjoy moderate exercise every day and have an easy-going temperament. With their sturdy build and endurance Berners have been trained to pull children in a cart or to compete in carting and drafting competitions. A perfect blend of brain and brawn, this breed was the ideal farm dog in the mountains of Switzerland, where they were the perfect workhorse for farmers and shepherds alike.

Bernese Mountain Dogs stand 23-28 inches tall and weigh 70-115 pounds.

Bernese Mountain Dogs generally live for 6 to 8 years.
